Shopping in Slovenia

Interesting items to buy in Slovenia are the Rogaska crystal, lace, wood carvings, ceramics, woolens, wines, wine carafes called majolika, art, tapestries, embroidery, leather boxes, filigree jewellery, handmade carpets and other locally made items. Shops specialising in handicrafts are good places to begin.

Prices are high compared to most Eastern European countries (except Croatia), but generally a bit lower (but not by much) compared to Italy or Austria. Slovenia entered the Eurozone on January 1st, 2007 and now utilises the euro (€, EUR) as its currency, having previously used the Slovenian tolar (SIT).

As for shopping hours, lor local shops, typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am-7 pm, and Saturday, 8 am-1 pm. In the larger cities, shopping malls and supermarket chains, such as Interspar, often keep the following hours: Monday-Friday, 9 am-9 pm; Saturday, 8 am-9 pm; and Sunday, 9 am-1 or 2 pm. Note that shopping malls are closed on some holidays.

The large majority of shops have moved from the centre to the BTC City Shopping District, located at the north-eastern edge of Ljubljana. However, several department stores such as Maximarket and Nama still persist in the city centre. Additionally, the ?opova Street and the Old Town probably have the densest collection of small shops in the centre.

Fashionable shoe stores are abound in Ljubljana and for the latest selection, head to shops on Stari trg in the Old Town.
